Sep 7, 2008. #1. When I bought my new Discovery 3, almost 3 years ago, I didn't realise that having an automatic gear box would mean that the car would choose a gear it fancies and stay in it for some time. The other week I drove from North to South and the blighter was stuck permanently in 3rd gear. I suppose it could have been worse.
None of this solves the problem but I 'll offer a couple of suggestions: 1. Make sure the coolant system is fully bled. 2. Make sure you have no coolant leaks, check the plastic bleeder valve under the engine cover. They are plastic and do go bad. 3. Make sure you have no intake leaks and have good crankcase breather valve.
I found that the cable was screwed fully in to the actuator shaft. Looking at the manual it states that the cable must be screwed into the actuator shaft 5 full turns only, that was causing the jam. Decided to remove the motor/gearbox and found one of the nylon gears was stripped, luckily I had purchased a spare set.
The engine now responds from about 1500rpm rather then the 2000+ rpm as it was before. With a roof rack fitted on a recent trip to Vryheid and back we averaged 10.2lt/100km on the way down and 10.5lt/100km on the way back (uphill). This in comparison of between 11.7 and 12.5lt/100km before without roof rack fitted.

The problem was subject to a Land Rover Technical Bulletin issued in 2013, and then a later bulletin LTB00487V6 issued in 2015. But this was only
